MEXICO CITY – Two Chinese nationals traveling to Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup fell victim to an armed robbery just minutes after landing. The incident, which occurred late on June 10, highlights ongoing safety concerns for tourists in the vicinity of Mexico City International Airport (AICM).
According to the victims, identified only as Mr. Wang and Mr. Li, the ordeal began approximately 30 minutes after their arrival. While en route to their hotel via private car service, two assailants on a motorcycle pulled alongside their vehicle—a tactic commonly associated with local "motochorros" (motorcycle-riding robbers).
How the Robbery Unfolded
The victims reported that they did not speak Spanish and initially relied on their hired driver to interpret the situation. Unaware of the danger, they only realized they were being targeted when the suspects brandished firearms and demanded they roll down the windows."We weren't wearing any luxury brands; we were dressed normally," one victim recounted on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok). "It wasn't until they pulled out guns that we understood what was happening."
Losses and Police Response
The robbers made off with several valuable items:- Mr. Wang: Lost a Rolex watch.
- Mr. Li: Had his backpack stolen, containing a laptop, cash, and most critically, his passport and travel documents.
Safe Return and Embassy Assistance
Despite the traumatic experience, both individuals are now safe. With urgent assistance from the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in Mexico, the men successfully obtained emergency travel documents.They departed Mexico on June 13 and have since returned safely to China.
